PAKEHA

Refers to European New Zealanders. Used by Maori originally to refer to “British Europeans,” in a contemporary context, it means a New Zealander of European descent. Opinions are often strongly divided within non-Maori about whether they identify as Pakeha or European New Zealand. The term is not used in the census that is held every five years. Instead, Statistics New Zealand uses the category “New Zealand European.” In the 2013 census, roughly 7,500 people self-identified as “Pakeha.” See also .
